A new research has revealed that young children are at the greatest risk in summer for dog bites and the more susceptible sites to severe bites are head and neck. The researchers analyzed 84 cases of children with dog bites.
Although it is not obvious why children have higher tendency of to be fallen a prey to dog bites in summer, it is assumed that it is because children spend more time in outdoor activities with their dogs in warmer months. Another possible reason may be that dogs have more petulant behavior in hot weather.
If local health officials are accurately and timely reported about dog bites, it will be helpful in educating the medical professionals to identify dog bite trend and design preventive strategies.
A data collecting system is also recommended to gather all the necessary information such as capability of child care, sex and breed of dog, signs of provocation, spay-neuter status, and history of previous aggression along with dog control, time of event, previous history of patient regarding dog bites, duration of dog ownership, site where injury took place, temperament of dog after the incident and history of dog’s vaccination. Furthermore, the researchers laid stress on creating awareness among the families that risk of dog bites get increased during the summer season.
