A new research has suggested the recent anticipation, over the use of maggots to treat leg ulcer, as a premature treatment.
The researchers compared maggots with a typical hydrogel to cure leg ulcers and found that there is a slight difference between the two remedies.
Maggots are thought as an efficient therapy due to their power of cleaning out dead tissues during the process of debridement which stimulates healing and helps in getting rid of bugs like MRSA.On the other hand the typical remedy for leg ulcers is a water-based gel which aids in keeping the wound wet and improves the natural process of healing.
In the latest research, the scientists treated the patients either with maggots or commonly used hydrogel and observed their progress for around one year.
Between the two treatments, there was no considerable difference in the timing of healing up the ulcers or improvement in quality of life instead maggots were found to be more pain giving.
There was only one benefit observed that maggots cleaned up the dead tissues in the wound more quickly. Hence researchers suggested the resurrection in the usage of maggots, a premature approach. As larval therapy could clean the wounds actively being an efficient debriding agent but it did not mean that rapid clean up did not cause rapid healing.
So, it is upon the clinicians to suggest the more suitable treatment for their patients, one of the researchers said.
