In the May/June issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion,
findings of a recent research have been published showing that obese workers who are also afflicted by diabetes are less productive in comparison to their ordinary weighed colleagues.
In this study, 7,338 working adults were surveyed regarding missed work times, abridged work efficacy, and obstacles in daily chores and activities. The results were astonishing as obese people with type-2 diabetes lost a lot of work time as compared to normal people i.e. 11 percent to 15 percent of work time which amounts to 5.9 hours a week.
This impairment in activities is not only limited to work, but other daily activities like shopping and working out is also impaired by the obesity combined with type-2 diabetes at a rate of about 20 percent to 34 percent.
Important point to note is that here not only obesity is the factor, but diabetes is also a party in lessening the productivity rate at work as well as in daily activities. If proper attention is allocated to this serious issue, soon the “employers who spend money in a lifestyle intervention will find their investment returned to them in the form of increased productivity and reduced absenteeism,” said Anne Wolf, an instructor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
