It should be remembered that a group of sportsmen who consume steroids are not harmful to the general public. There are in fact quite a few reasons for drug testing in sports. Firstly, such tests would guarantee fairness in the sports by prohibiting the use of the performance enhancing drugs. Secondly, it also helps in protecting the health of a particular athlete. Consumption of such anabolic steroids could be harmful to the body. So there are some tests that show how the steroids work and are pretty accurate when it comes to the results. However, there are some athletes who take a few countermeasures to beat the anabolic tests.
The International Olympic Commission (IOC) is responsible for conducting the most accurate and precise drug- testing programs. The drug testing phenomenon began in the Olympics held in Mexico City in the year 1968. Initially there were tests being conducted only for amphetamines or any other drug that would help to enhance performance. Athletes who used to buy steroids were then punished after the latter was added in the list of prohibited drugs. Hence the first ever Olympics that conducted the anabolic steroid testing were held in Montreal in the year 1973.
